Easy DIY Holiday Gift Guide for Couples

in Tips on 12/20/16

MYTH: Gifts are only as valuable as their price tag.

TRUTH: The most valuable gifts don’t come with one.

Social media swindles us into thinking that to celebrate each other we need to dig deep into our wallets. Let us tell you, that’s simply not true.

On a budget? These DIY gifts for your special someone are just what you’re looking for.

(We’ve done each of these gifts for each other over the years, and the memories we have from them are irreplaceable!)

Here we go our Easy DIY Holiday Gift Guide for Couples!

1. Journal

This might be one to bookmark and save as it takes time to complete it but it’s oh-so-worth it.

Every day, for a year before the intended giving, write why you love your partner a little extra that day.

(I gave this gift to my husband as a wedding present on our wedding day!)

I kept a file on my smart phone to jot down what I loved a little extra about him that day, sometimes it was deep, meaningful paragraphs and others it was that we could fart in front of each other. This gift was amazing for both of us to read daily and remember the past year and why our relationship is awesome-most of the time.

But the best gift was for me as I was writing it, I checked in with gratitude everyday for my husband. It kept me in check when things got hard, it became the most rewarding (and sometimes challenging) part of my day.

2. Love Letters – Per Month or “Open When”

This gift pictured we bought at Chapters but could easily be DIY’d. A letter to open every month or for specific occasion, will keep the love flowing all year long.

Here’s Some prompts to get you started.

Open when:

  • You miss me

  • You’ve had a hard day

  • You’re feeling happy

  • I’m mad at you

  • You’ve succeeded at something

  • You’ve failed at something

  • When you’re mad at me

  • It’s your birthday

  • It’s Valentine’s Day

  • It’s Christmas

  • We’ve had a loss

  • You need an “I love you”

Per Month:

  • What I love about you is…

  • My favourite things about you are…

  • I wish for us a future full of…

  • Something important you’ve taught me is…

  • Here’s a story I’ve never told you…

  • A memory that will always be with me is…

  • This is an invitation to…

  • You are incredible because…

3. Scavenger hunt

What’s a better gift than a day of fun together? Sending your loved one on a wild hunt for a treat, an activity, a present (or all of the above!) becomes a gift itself.

Fun clues to write up are essential, rhyming is optional.

Get creative! Send them around the house, the neighbourhood, or the city, involve others or keep it just the two of you. This gift is always a win.

4. Coupon book

A classic. Easy to complete and super meaningful, sexy, or fun, this gift is perfect for anyone.

Fill an envelope with “coupons” for your partner to redeem for anything you wish! Chores, back rubs, sleep ins, dinners, sexual favours, the sky is the limit!

5. Year of dates

This gift in the picture is one of my favs we exchanged last year. A date for every month, for an entire year. New things to try, dates that go with the seasons, free dates, some pricey ones, but bottom line–all quality time together.

This gift was a favourite, I think we will have to repeat this one again next year!

There you have it.
